I never figured out why exactly it wasn't working, but I did discover that Windows 8 includes a program that runs ISO files. The instruction was to 'change' the default opening program to Windows Explorer -which will make the file's icon a CD- and then right click the file and, at the top, it will appear 'mount'... and that's how I made it work.
